Why we can't wait for summer in the Alps 04 May 2020

Why we can't wait for summer in the Alps

It was a shame to see this winter season come to a sudden end. But there’s still a lot to look forward to. While we’re all doing our bit at home or completing necessary, lifesaving work during the COVID-19 pandemic, the spring flowers are blooming and the evenings are getting longer. Summer is coming. After a long period of confinement there’s nothing we’re looking forward to more than getting out into the endless green mountains, and we hope to welcome you for a well-deserved mountain break! Here are a few of our favourite things about summer in the Alps to whet your appetite.

Fresh air

If you’re in a city right now you probably can’t wait to get some fresh mountain air, and we’re right there with you! We think the mountains are the best place to be in the summer because the air is clean and pure, you’ll never be stuck in a traffic jam and you’ll rarely have to wait for a table at your favourite restaurant. Unlike most places, the mountains have their high season in the winter, so compared to a beach holiday the Alps feel tranquil and deserted; all that space just for you! And if you can’t stand the stifling heat of the city during the summer, the higher altitudes of the mountains offer a fresh breeze and balmy temperatures.

Lots of Activities

Do you want to relax? Do some low-impact exercise? Or an activity that’ll get your adrenaline pumping? The Alps offer something for everyone. Whether it’s exploring the mountain terrain on foot, enjoying a relaxing massage or spa day, or heading out with a guide to do some white water rafting and canyoning, there’s an activity to satisfy every member of your group. And keen cyclists, don’t forget that both Courchevel and Les Gets are home to amazing mountain bike trails, as well as some of the world’s most renowned road cycling routes. Plus, in Courchevel you can use the summer lift network for free, whether you’re a runner, hiker or mountain biker.

Stunning Views

From lush green meadows to bright summer wild flowers to bright lakes filled with melt-water, summer in the Alps is beautiful. In Courchevel you can spend your days lounging by the über blue Lac de la Rosiére, in Les Gets you can enjoy an evening barbecue at the aptly-named Lac Vert or spend a relaxing afternoon with your family at the swimming lake nestled amongst the bike trails above the village. And if you want more, just look around you, you’re surrounded by peaks to climb with stunning views from all angles. In Les Gets you don’t need to go too far to enjoy incredible views of Mont Blanc, while in Courchevel you can view the Italian side from the summit of Le Signal.

Reconnect with Nature

When you come to the Alps in the summer you don’t have to go far to see all the fantastic Alpine wildlife and flora. Marmots, chamois, eagles, and of course the good old alpine cow are all a quick hike or lift ride away, as are colourful wild flowers at the beginning of summer and wild fruits like blueberries, raspberries and strawberries at the end. But perhaps the best thing about summer in the Alps is finding the opportunity to disconnect from everyday life, take in the views and relax in whatever way you choose. Going for an energising hike, sunbathing by the lake or relaxing on the terrace with a glass of wine and a good book are all excellent ways to get away from the stress of everyday life and surround yourself with Alpine goodness.
